Excursions Near Kuala Lumpur

Published on October 20, 2007

I’ve been very busy with work lately, and have been wanting to take a break a bit more frequently, but somewhere great but not too far from Kuala Lumpur. For a while, its always been the same old thing - either Genting Highlands, or Colmar Tropicale at Bukit Tinggi.

Then I found this website which has quite an impressive list of things to do within certain radius of Kuala Lumpur. Just what I needed. Among what I’m kind of eyeing right now is:

  • - Kuala Selangor - Coastal Fishing Town
  • - Pulau Ketam - Fishing Village on Stilts
  • - Pasir Penambang - Seafood Haven (Yum!)

These are within a 50-100km radius of KL. Not too bad. Will make it a point to try it out one by one, and put in a little review on each of them here.

Hisyam - One of the best guitarists in Malaysia

Published on October 19, 2007

Its unbelievable that a man with this kind of talent hasn’t been offered a recording contract! His skills are jaw dropping.

From his website samtriggy.com, Hisyam is a humble person. Quoting from his forum, a guy asks: “Can you put your bio in the page so I can know you much better. I know that you’re humble person but at least introduce your self much longer than ‘Hi, There. I’m Hisyam from Malaysia’”.

And he answers, “thanks for your intererest. I’m glad to do so but for the time being, let my music describe it for me. In future I’ll put it in when everything is ready.”

I’d like to support my fellow Malaysian by promoting him in this blog. If you’re from Europe or US, do invite him for some shows. If you know someone from a recording company, do introduce him.

Islamic Malaysia in Kota Bharu

Published on

Kota Bharu is the capital of the state of Kelantan. Kelantan has been ruled by the opposition party PAS (Islamic Party of Malaysia). Through the eyes of an outsider, Kelantan is the most socially conservative and Islamic state.

I beg to defer.

Kelantan is where you’ll probably find the most honest and friendly people in Malaysia. If you loose your wallet, a local would report it to the police station. You’ll see there’s less large corporations and mega hypermarkets, but many flourishing small-to-medium business men and women - and yes - women in Kelantan almost dominates business.

Its the only place in Malaysia where you can have RM2.00 (US$0.50) in your pocket with a filling meal with abundance in choices.

Check out this post about Kota Bharu from adventure-travel-tales-and-tips.com.

Malaysia Turning 50!

Published on August 8, 2007

malaysia merdeka

Independence day is around the corner. Its only a few weeks left to 31st August where Malaysia will celebrate its 50th anniversary of independence. You can tell by all the mega discounts shopping malls offer, petrol stations giving away prizes in contests, and Malaysian flags flapping like crazy on almost every vehicle, especially taxis.

I’ve seen my country progress, I’m happy to see more racial tolerance. It was difficult finding Malays, Chinese and Indians sitting on one table having lunch together. Now it seems more visible, though its not yet to a level where its supposed to. But progress is there, and persistence is what I hope for.

One thing that really worries me is the sudden influx of crime. Almost everyday we read murder cases, rapes, purse snatchers on motorcycles, children and babies killed, and the list seems to never end. The thought that one sick psychotic moron would cut off a young lady’s arm just to steel a purse without even knowing whether it has money in it in the first place…is just too grim to imagine. I wonder what our country has become, and what it can potentially become if this continues. I’d like to see our streets and cities swarming with patrol police at the very least.

Many people thought that the agricultural economy segment is almost dead due to the recent focus on energy, heavy industries and ICT. But its now kicking back, and kicking back big time. Its helped many poor farmers and help spread development to more remote areas rather than focusing big cities. The west shows interest in our herbs and wild flowers for alternative medicine and health products. We are now less dependent on meat from New Zealand and Australia since our farms and ranches embrace proper production processes and marketing strategies - the middle east being one major client.

In summary, I’m a proud Malaysian, I see the many opportunities in this country. Its been an exciting year, I’m eager to see what’s on the plate next year.

Icebow Over Langkawi

Published on August 7, 2007

langkawi icebow

The sudden appearance of a full icebow or sundog (parhelion) above the skies of Langkawi yesterday caught the attention of the people on the island. Photographers and participants at the Langkawi International Dialogue (LID) snapped away the image of a rainbow-like halo encircling the sun at about 2.40 pm, before it disappeared about 20 minutes later.

An Icebow is a phenomenon similar to a rainbow, except that it is formed by the refraction of sunlight through cloud-suspended ice crystals, instead of raindrops or water drops suspended in the air. The ice crystals are from cirrus clouds and have to be of the type with a large radius for the phenomenon to take place. - Bernama

Pictures of Malaysia - In Prayer

Another nice photo for all of you. This is a typical scene of a Muslim Malay in prayer. I love the lighting effects of this photo. It portrays light shining through, which depicts what Muslim whisper in every prayer - ‘Thee do we worship, and Thine aid we seek. Show us the right way’.

Borneo - Itinerary suggestion

Published on July 26, 2007

If you’re coming from Kuala Lumpur, fly to Kuching first. Kuching city is interesting with lots of things to see. The Kuching Laksa ( a local noodle) is a must try. From Kuching go for a river safari to visit an Iban long house - the traditional house for locals. Check out from Sarawak Tourism Information office for best price.

Then move overland by public bus to Sibu then continue to Miri- Visit Niah Caves where people lived 40,000 years ago. Then fly to Mulu Caves. Mulu Resort has tours offered, possibly more cost effective. If you feel you can trek, you can trek all the way out to Limbang and take a night.

From Limbang, you can cross the border to  enter Brunei Temburong district overland, and take a public speed boat to Brunei, Bandar Seri Begawan. Check in the grand City, B$60/night or Jubilee B$60/night. In Brunei Visit the Water Village from the town jetty with B$1 for the boat across.

From Brunei, Ferry to Labuan and another Ferry to Kota Kinabalu.

Kota Kinabalu, Sabah has great and cheap seafood & lots of Bed & Breakfasts.
Must visits in Sabah are Kinabalu Park, Sepilok, Sukau or Klias wetland, Padas white water rafting and Turtle Island in Sandakan. A dive in Sipadan is not to miss as well if you’re into it.

Diving in Malaysia. Where to choose?

Published on July 25, 2007

With so many islands and beach destinations, where’s a good place to dive in west Malaysia? Langkawi? Perhentian? Redang? Tioman? Pangkor?

A week in Langkawi seems to me to be a waste of diving to me. There is only one spot to dive there and not much good either. The water is not very clear.

There is no reason why you cannot go to the east coast islands and start diving there.

None of the islands ( Perhentian, Redang or Tioman) have challenging diving conditions and never much in the way of tides or currents. Tell the divemaster you have not dived for some time (they will probably make you do a pool test anyway) and he/she will plan the dive to suit you.

Langkawi is OK for a few days sightseeing and cheap drinks but if its diving you want, forget it. Redang and Perhentians are close to each other and water there is very calm and clear with temperature at least 28C. Very civilised!

Dead Fish

Published on July 21, 2007

malaysia picture photoHere’s a typical photo of a Malaysian wet market. Most things in here are cheap already, but you still can get more value of you know how to haggle your way around.

Markets like these are sadly loosing popularity, especially in Kuala Lumpur, where grocery shopping has been replaced by mega stores like Tesco and Carrefour.

But for those who don’t mind a little bit of o’natural smell of the wet market, you can get more value for money here. The produce is also 10 times more fresh than mega markets.

Getting a taste of Malaysia (as soon as you arrive)

Published on May 23, 2007

There’s a very nice restaurant with authentic tasty malay food near KL Central. To get there, ask directions on how to get to the Monorail station. You will exit KL Central, and you will have to cross Jalan Tun Sambanthan street to meet a row of shops. Go to your right till you find “Restoran Puteri” (almost towards the end of the shop lot).

Don’t forget to try out Soto, Laksa Johor and their variety of side dishes with normal white rice. Will cost you less than US$ 2 per person for a meal.

Pantai Sri Tujuh

Pantai Sri Tujuh

Pantai Sri Tujuh, or Beach of Seven Lagoons is located about seven kilometres north of Kota Bharu and near the Thai border, hosts the Annual Malaysian Kite Festival. During this festival, Pantai Seri Tujuh will be busy with enthusiasts of the traditional kite, known as the wau.

The drive there passes through scenic coastline and fishing villages where traditional boats are built the traditional way. A modest resort and chalet accommodation is available here should you wish to stay overnight.

Getting There

Take the bus no 27, 27A or 43 from the Kota Bharu Central Bus Station.
