Malaysia tip - Gift Taboos

Malaysia being a multi-racial country with mainly Malay, Chinese and Indian - each race has their own celebration. For example, Deepavali and Hari Raya Puasa is just around the corner (in about 2 weeks) for Indians and Malaysia.

Celebrations in Malaysia is common to have open houses, where friends and family are free to come in go while they feast on food which is often lavishly prepared. It is also common to bring gifts not only during celebrations, but also just a simple visit to say hi. There are things to remember when giving gifts. These are some of the taboos for each race:

Malays being Muslims, would find any gift containing pork (or pig connotations), alcohol (or alcohol connotations), dogs (or any dog connotations), as extremely offensive.

The Chinese believe clocks, straw sandals, sharp objects and handkerchiefs are bad luck and should never be extended. The number four (4) symbolises death – and should be avoided at all costs!  Red is always a good colour.

Indians, being Hindus, do not eat beef.  Therefore anything with cow connotations should not be given to an Indian.
Hopefully this will help in making those embarrasing mistakes. Enjoy!
