If you’re coming from Kuala Lumpur, fly to Kuching first. Kuching city is interesting with lots of things to see. The Kuching Laksa ( a local noodle) is a must try. From Kuching go for a river safari to visit an Iban long house - the traditional house for locals. Check out from Sarawak Tourism Information office for best price.
Then move overland by public bus to Sibu then continue to Miri- Visit Niah Caves where people lived 40,000 years ago. Then fly to Mulu Caves. Mulu Resort has tours offered, possibly more cost effective. If you feel you can trek, you can trek all the way out to Limbang and take a night.
From Limbang, you can cross the border to enter Brunei Temburong district overland, and take a public speed boat to Brunei, Bandar Seri Begawan. Check in the grand City, B$60/night or Jubilee B$60/night. In Brunei Visit the Water Village from the town jetty with B$1 for the boat across.
From Brunei, Ferry to Labuan and another Ferry to Kota Kinabalu.
Kota Kinabalu, Sabah has great and cheap seafood & lots of Bed & Breakfasts.
Must visits in Sabah are Kinabalu Park, Sepilok, Sukau or Klias wetland, Padas white water rafting and Turtle Island in Sandakan. A dive in Sipadan is not to miss as well if you’re into it.
